Aragatsotn – Day Trip

Aragatsotn – Day Trip

🗓️ One-Day Tour: Yerevan → Byurakan → Alphabet Monument → Saghmosavank → Amberd → Yerevan

Discover Armenia’s rich cultural and natural heritage on this one-day journey to the Aragatsotn region. From stars to sacred stones, this tour blends science, spirituality, and history — all with breathtaking views of Mount Aragats and the Kasagh Gorge.

📍 1. Byurakan Observatory A Gateway to the Stars
Founded in 1946 by renowned astrophysicist Viktor Ambartsumian, the Byurakan Observatory is one of the most important astronomical centers in the region. It played a vital role in Soviet-era space research and continues to study stars, galaxies, and comets. Tourists can explore its impressive telescope domes and learn about Armenia’s contribution to space science. 📍 2. Orgov Radio Optical Telescope (ROT-54)
The Giant Eye of Armenia
Hidden in the hills of Orgov, the ROT-54 is one of the world's largest radio-optical telescopes. Built during the Soviet era, its massive 54-meter dish was used for space and satellite research. While it’s no longer operational, the colossal structure is a fascinating stop for science lovers and photographers. The surrounding scenery makes it feel like a hidden sci-fi movie set.
📍 3. Armenian Alphabet Monument (Հայոց Այբուբենի Հուշարձան / Տառերի Պուրակ) A Tribute to Language & Identity
This striking outdoor monument was built in 2005 to celebrate the Armenian alphabet’s creator, Mesrop Mashtots. Each of the 39 giant stone letters is carved in Armenian style and scattered along a beautiful plain beneath Mount Aragats. It’s a perfect place to snap a photo with the letter that begins your name!
📍 4. Saghmosavank Monastery A Monastery of Psalms Over the Gorge
Built in the 13th century, Saghmosavank means “Monastery of the Psalms.” It sits dramatically on the edge of the Kasagh River Gorge, offering panoramic views of the cliffs and valleys. The peaceful setting and sacred architecture create a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
📍 5. Lunch Near Saghmosavank Taste Authentic Armenian Flavors
After exploring history and nature, enjoy a delicious Armenian lunch in a nearby tavern from where there is a view of the gorge and Ararat. Traditional dishes like khorovats (grilled meat), dolma, and lavash will recharge you for the rest of the day. The warm village hospitality adds to the charm.

📍 6. Amberd Fortress (Optional) A Fortress in the Clouds
If time allows, visit Amberd, the “fortress in the clouds,” located 2,300 meters high on the slopes of Mount Aragats. Built in the 7th century, Amberd was once a military stronghold protecting the kingdom. The complex includes a church, fortress ruins, and epic views of the surrounding mountains.🗓️ One-Day Tour details
